Nancy Upton Spoofs American Apparel

According to the results of a popular vote, Nancy Upton was the uncontested winner of American Apparel’s plus-size model contest, “The Next Big Thing.” But according to American Apparel, she wasn’t even in the running. Since the poll ended, the company has publicly snubbed the contest winner.

Like many others, Nancy Upton was offended by American Apparel’s approach to its plus-size model search. The twenty-four year old plus-size student decided the best way to express her distaste was to beat the company at its own game. “I took that tone of theirs—’Hey fat people, you can play too’—and used it as an inspiration for my photos,” she has said in interviews. Playing off of American Apparel’s iconic advertising style, Upton submitted ironic, faux-raunchy photos of herself taking a bath in ranch dressing, indulging in chocolate syrup, and having a little too much fun with a cherry pie.
